God Is Love

1 Corinthians 13
New International Version (NIV)

13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

What is love ? How do we love others ? How do we love people who don’t show it back ?

Love. At first glance it seems so small and easily understood, but the more you look at it the more you realize how big and deep love really is. Love is not just a word to be said or something to be celebrated in February, but it is a Being. God is Love and without Him there isn’t any. God created us in His own image, giving us the gift of being able to love. Sadly when Adam and Eve sinned they became corrupted and so the gift of being able to love that God gave us became distorted, conditional, and we lost the understanding of what love truely is. God doesn’t want His children to live this life never knowing Him, never knowing His love for them, never understanding the Gift He has given us, never knowing the power of love when we give it over to Him to refine us.

Love is a live and Love is a gift. A gift freely given to us from God. Not just our capacity to love but God gave a Gift to redeem us so that we could have understanding of His love again. The Gift I am talking about is Jesus. God sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and pay the debt that we owed. You see, the penalty of sin is death and eternal separation from God. God is Holy and He can not sin and He can not allow sin into the Kingdom of Heaven. God loves man so much and wants man with Him for eternity. The Bible says that God doesn’t want anyone to perish.

The Bible says God loved us so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins taking the punishment we deserve. Jesus was without sin, He didn’t deserve to die on a cross, but He did so that we could be saved. What Jesus did was True Love. Jesus’ life, death and ressurection on earth was God’s ultimate expression of love towards us. Jesus not only walked in love but Jesus Is Love. To truely understand Love we must give our lives to the One who Is Love and that is to give our lives to Jesus. When Jesus died on the cross and rose again He redeemed our capacity to love and by giving it over to Him in prayer and looking to Him (By reading God’s Word, Praying and asking for understanding and asking God to help us to love) we not only have a better understanding of Love, but God starts to remove the distorted love we have and replace it with a love like His. Learning to love others as God loves us is a process and we will often times make mistakes, but God is patient and He is always ready to help us.

In order to love others, especially those who don’t show it in return we must ask God to help us. God knows what it’s like to love those who reject Him and even those who hate Him. With His help we can grow in our ability to love others and even to love God Himself. The more we see how much God loves us the more our love for Him grows and by seeing how much God loves someone (me) who hurts Him daily with their sins we come to understand the importance and power of loving those who hurt us. We understand the power of forgiveness, compassion, and so much more when we ask God to help us to love and to give us a better understanding of who He is and Who God is, is Love.Love1

A Prayer
Dear Father God,
We praise You and thank You for who You are. We thank You for loving us so much that You sent Jesus to die on the cross for us and take the punishment that we deserved. We ask for Your forgiveness Father because we have not loved others the way that You would love them. We ask that You would help us to have a better understanding of Your Love Father God and that You would empower us through Your Holy Spirit to love as You love. To love those who are hurting, who are broken, who are lost, and those who have hurt us. To love those who need You Father God so that by me showing them Your Love they would see past me and see You. Help me to have an understanding of love Father God and please renew this heart and mind everyday. As it says in Your Word Father God “create in me a pure heart O God and renew a steadfast Spirit within me.” This is my prayer to You Father God.
In Jesus’ Mighty Name We Pray Amen.
