Recently my family has been watching a teaching on Words by Robert Morris. During the teaching he said something about man and our words that has stuck with me since I heard it, he said that God created the whole world with His words and man is created in God’s image and God intended for us to be without sin, but when sin entered the world we were created and so man’s words
“20From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled;
with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.
21 The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
The Power Of Our Words
We’ve heard so many times that our words are powerful, but how often do we think about what we say ? It seems that the number of times we hear about the power of our words we just as equally overlook it. We’ve all said things we didn’t mean, we’ve all unintentionally hurt someones feelings, and we’ve all said something before considering the affects it would have on someone else and on ourselves. Recently my family and I have been watching a series of teachings on the power of words by Robert Morris. I’ve really learned a lot about the powerof my words. One thing that really stuck with me was when he talked about God creating the world with words. Man was created by God with words and God made us in His image. When God created us in His own image He gave us the power to speak life. Man being without sin spoke things that were pleasing to God, there was no hurtful speech coming from man’s lips. Just as God spoke life, man was created to speak life (man cannot speak a tree into existence, but we can build up our brother’s and sister’s in Christ with our words) or God’s Words, but when sin entered the world man and his tongue became corrupt and so instead of using words to speak life we speak death and tear down. Our words have the power to hurt or heal but in order to speak life man must surrender his tongue to God, to pray for self control in our speech, for help to speak God’s Word instead of our own. We must always consider what our words can do to others and what our words can do to ourselves.
The Power Of Our Words In Scripture (God’s Words and Man’s Words)
The power of our words is revealed in Proverbs 18:20,21 “From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled;with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.The tongue has the power of life and death,and those who love it will eat its fruit.” also in Romans 10:8,9 “But what does it say? ‘The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,’ that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” In order to be saved we must confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, the Word is God and when we speak the Word with our mouths we speak life. The devil doesn’t want us to speak the Word, he wants us to speak death, lies, and curses over ourselves and other people. When we speak our own words and not God’s we get ourselves into trouble. This statement leads me into another thing Robert Morris said about words. He said “What is a word worth ? Well, I don’t know if I could give you an exact value on each word, but I will tell you this. A word is so valuable God is recording every single one for judgment day. “In Matthew 12: 36 it says “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.”
Where does the problem start ?
In Luke 6:45 it says “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Everything we say and don’t say are important. A man’s problem with words starts in his heart. It is only through Jesus that we can be made new, have a renewed heart, a renewed mind and in turn have a renewed tongue. We must pray for a renewed heart and a tongue that is pleasing to God daily.
